Always Be Ready

In today’s lesson, we’re learning about a parable Jesus taught about being ready for his return. Now, the disciples were probably a little confused. Jesus hadn’t left them yet so they didn’t understand why he was talking about when he returns. So, Jesus told a story about 10 bridesmaids and a groom. Back then, bridesmaids would help a bride get ready and weddings were an all day event lasting into the night. In the story, five wise bridesmaids were prepared and brought lanterns and extra oil so they could see once it was dark. The other five bridesmaids weren’t prepared and didn’t have enough oil to keep their lanterns lit. At some point, they had to leave to get more oil. While they were gone, the groom came and invited the bridesmaids who were there to a party. When the other ladies returned, it was too late. They weren’t allowed in. Here’s the point. Jesus is the groom in the story and we are the bridesmaids. Jesus will return some day to bring his people to live with him in heaven. We don’t know when that day will come, but we need to be ready. Do you know how we get ready? We put our trust in Jesus and what he did for us on the cross!
